Commentary: | Schoonover read the copy sent to him by the publishers with an eye to his illustration possibilities. This is evident in a letter that he wrote to The American Boy on March 9, 1914: “Marmaduke of Tennessee received. I have not entirely finished the story but so far I find it very interesting and full of pictures. You need not worry about my not getting into the spirit of the tale. If any one should simply write ‘Civil War’ across the cover of a manuscript and send it to me, that would be sufficient.” (archives, correspondence) | |
