Commentary: Three paintings were commissioned by James Thomas Chandler, Sr. of Wilmington, Delaware in 1930, for an over-the-mantle triptych in the house he was building at 517 West 18th Street in Wilmington. This work depicts the Chandler farm and was painted to be center piece. When finished in 1931, the triptych was framed into place, but Chandler never moved into the house. The house was sold twice with the paintings undisturbed as they “looked like a fresco.” However, before the third owners moved, they had the triptych removed and conserved as three separate pieces. All three subsequently descended in the family. (interview May 15, 2003)
The two smaller side pieces are #1881 and #1882.
Provenance: Commissioned by James Thomas Chandler, Sr., Wilmington, Delaware [1931]; not known; John Ross; Collection of Nancy Anderson
