Commentary: | In a letter dated October 1940, to Miss Luitwieler, of the Lynn Public Library, Schoonover explains why he decided to accept this commission: “May I say that the change upon my part to make this painting for the Library was due to the choice of my picture: the fact that Howard Pyle did so much for me and that the various individuals who work in libraries have always gone to the utmost pains and trouble to search out and obtain data for my work whenever I have gone to them. This work upon my part is, in a way, an appreciative gesture to that great army of librarians, who like yourself, serve this community as perhaps no others do.” (archives, correspondence)
