Commentary: | Schoonover was commissioned to paint a copy of “Marooned,” a large oil painting by his mentor, Howard Pyle. Using vivid colors and dramatic lighting effects, Schoonover, like Pyle, dramatizes the plight of the solitary, marooned pirate on the beach. The scene evokes memories of pirate adventures that the artist illustrated and that have remained favorites in literature and the visual arts. Schoonover revealed how he felt about completing this commission when he wrote en verso, “With apologies to Howard Pyle.” The copy is slightly smaller than Pyle’s original. (day books) |
