Commentary: | In 1945, the ‘Clothes Line’, an annual sale of paintings by Delaware painters, was held on the Court House steps in Wilmington. This landscape was offered for sale. The inclement weather dampened the spirits and attendance at the sale, but gave Katherine Hopkins the opportunity to get a good deal as her son relates in this letter to his family on May 20, 1945: “One good result of the rain, though, is that we now have a Frank Schoonover original in the home. Miss Mo, bless her heart, decided to become an art collector…With the crowd small, Mo got a bargain and she is as pleased as punch with it, and well she may be, for it is a beauty.”
