Commentary: Schoonover painted this landscape from ‘Indian Rock,’ a large rock formation jutting out into the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania side down river from Bushkill. Sandy Beach is seen on the right at the tip of Wallpack Bend on the New Jersey side of the river. The artist included a bald eagle seen flying above the beach.
The artist notes that he painted this work “on Home Journal canvas” which would indicate that he painted it over an illustration that was published in the Ladies Home Journal. However, there is no other evidence to indicate which illustration that was. (day books)
Provenance: Sold by the artist to Governor and Mrs. Richard C. McMullen, Delaware (December 1950); descended in family to private collection
