Commentary: The Rose Gardens is a picturesque spot along the Brandywine River in Wilmington, Delaware. Schoonover often took his students to the River to paint in the fall and spring. If he was in Wilmington in the summer, as is the case with this painting, he went alone and painted various scenes along the river.
Provenance: Sold by artist to Robert N. Hearn, Wilmington, Delaware; by descent in family to Susan Adair Hutchison, West Grove, Pennsylvania; Emmert Auction Associates, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware (October 23, 2019); private collection
