Commentary: Here, “Schoonover heightens the air of the mystery this pirate possesses by placing him on a dark ground. This context serves to enhance the dramatic quality of the drawing and allows the highlights to standout. Schoonover further emphacizes the highlights through the use of white chalk – on the silver belt buckle, the gold earring, and the brass buttons.” (Drexel University Museum, 24)
